PENAN BAGS & BASKETS

Today in Sarawak, eastern part of Malaysia, there are still natives living in their large villages and longhouses away from big cities. These are also the people that are known for their skills of weaving, wood carving and even beadwork.

The Penans, highly skilled nomadic tribe, introduced handwoven baskets to the public and has since been their main source of income.

Rattans were commonly used as they were easily available in the forest, but because of deforestation, and the lack of resources  they have added a modern twist to this centuries old weaving tradition and replaced rattan with colorful plastic strips.

No longer limited to baskets, beautiful motif bags and clutches are now their popular items. We accept customization of these bags, but these may take time as these weavers are located in the rural villages, so do bear with us!
